The Michigan Department of Transportation’s newly drafted SCAN manual is intended to help planners and engineers assess and rate the surface condition of asphalt shared use paths by identifying the presence or absence of various surface defects. This presentation will outline some of these challenges that led to the creation of the SCAN manual, present the SCAN approach, and solicit discussion on implementation, and other agencies experiences with active transportation networks surface condition assessments.
