Emergency Responder Interaction Research
Patrick Son,
Gannett-Fleming
The recently completed NCHRP 20-102(16) research project explored strategies to promote the active participation of emergency responders in the connected, automated vehicle (CAV) technology development process. The research first aims to understand how CAVs may impact Traffic Incident Management (TIM) activities, including potential risks and benefits, and how (or if) responders are currently engaging with these technologies including Electric Vehicles. The team used this data to perform a gap analysis and identify the enablers and barriers to integrating Emergency Response/TIM perspectives. The synthesis of this research, coupled with the outreach and interview data, is used to develop a guidance document for both communities as well as a collection of effective communication products that can be used in both the emergency response, TIM, and CAV technology communities.
