Description

The District of Columbia has a multifaceted, layered approach to designing safer streets in service of Mayor Bowser’s commitment to Vision Zero. The District Department of Transportation’s (DDOT’s) robust data-driven safety programs focus on the High Injury Network (HIN), while its Traffic Safety Input (TSI) program is a mechanism to gather and prioritize street safety concerns directly from street users/residents. DDOT takes a unique approach to project implementation phasing in treatments to realize safety countermeasures earlier in the project process than typical capital project timelines. With safety and equity being DDOT’s primary goals, TSI and other proactive safety programs help DDOT allocate resources to the biggest safety concerns in areas of highest need.
