CV Certification & V2X Standards

CV Certification
Randy Roebuck, OmniAir Consortium
This session will present a certification overview and how device-level connectivity conformance and interoperability can benefit infrastructure owners and operators.  Specifically, the presentation will demonstrate how the concept and practice of an impartial, third-party certification provides a process for an objective evaluation and attestation that a device complies with standards-based requirements and industry consensus on protocol, interoperability, minimum performance, application behavior, and testing requirements.

V2X Standards
Nick Seling, HNTB
Despite broad support across the industry, there is currently no standard that defines a consistent approach to the deployment of most CV applications. Learn how Ohio has engaged with infrastructure owners and operators as well as automotive industry stakeholders to develop Standard Operating Principles (SOPs) for three CV applications: Curve Speed Warning, Lane Closure Warning, and Reduced Speed Zone Warning. The SOPs proactively define a consistent approach to the messages that IOOs provide to support these applications, while ensuring that industry stakeholders get the data that they need to support a full range of in-vehicle processes.

Jason House,
Jacobs
Ports, transit agencies, municipal fleets, and aviation (airside and landside) fleets represent a constant artery of goods and materials flowing into and out of the country, with countless industries reliant on their consistent and seamless operation. As public agencies plan, resiliency should be at the top of mind, pursuing strategies to strengthen their operations. This session will present a holistic program level approach to energy, resiliency, and equipment electrification based on a decade of expertise piloting and deploying medium and heavy-duty battery electric vehicles across numerous industries.

Changing Gears to zero-emissions trucks
Andreas Breiter,
McKinsey & Company
As the US begins transitioning towards net zero and a more sustainable future, many regulatory agencies have recognized the importance of the zero emissions trucks; this has resulted in mandates prohibiting the sale of combustion engine trucks, including new medium and heavy-duty vehicle sales zero-emission. The opportunity for the freight truck sector to decarbonize is enormous, but what comes first - the zero emissions trucks or the refueling/charging stations that support them? This session will present a set of data driven tools that include projections of freight flows in the US until 2050 in addition to powertrain projections and ensuing infrastructure requirements, to help align stakeholders on their required role in a successful ZE truck transition, accelerating decarbonization in the Midwest and throughout the United States.

Emergency Responder Interaction Research

Emergency Responder Interaction Research
Patrick Son,
Gannett-Fleming
The recently completed NCHRP 20-102(16) research project explored strategies to promote the active participation of emergency responders in the connected, automated vehicle (CAV) technology development process. The research first aims to understand how CAVs may impact Traffic Incident Management (TIM) activities, including potential risks and benefits, and how (or if) responders are currently engaging with these technologies including Electric Vehicles. The team used this data to perform a gap analysis and identify the enablers and barriers to integrating Emergency Response/TIM perspectives. The synthesis of this research, coupled with the outreach and interview data, is used to develop a guidance document for both communities as well as a collection of effective communication products that can be used in both the emergency response, TIM, and CAV technology communities.
